Call for Abstracts/Poster Presentations
OVERVIEW
Knowledge of the pathophysiology of treatment- and cancer-related symptoms is expanding. Further education in this area brings the potential to improve the quality of life for patients with cancer and the quality of care provided by cancer specialists. The conference will provide attendees with an overview of symptom and side-effect management, communication issues, and end-of-life care for patients with cancer.
Authors interested in presenting scientific data on the supportive and palliative care of patients with cancer should submit an abstract for review. Abstracts of superior quality will be selected by the scientific program committee for a poster presentation at the Fourth Annual Chicago Supportive Oncology Conference (October 16–18, 2008) and will be published in The Journal of Supportive Oncology. Abstracts will also be available for viewing online at www.supportiveoncology.net.
ABSTRACT DEADLINE
The deadline for submission of an abstract is August 1, 2008. Please note that this deadline is final, and we can offer no special consideration to submissions received after this date; abstracts received after the deadline will not be reviewed and will be discarded.
SUBMISSION METHOD
All abstracts must be submitted via electronic mail, either as an attachment or within the body of the e-mail. Abstracts should be sent to the attention of Jamie Von Roenn, MD, at abstracts@supportiveoncology.net. Submissions must also be accompanied by an Abstract Submission Form
and a Disclosure Form
from the Elsevier Office of Continuing Medical Education. For further information on these forms, please visit our Web site at www.supportiveoncology.net/chicago.
Confirmation of Submission
Presenters will be notified by e-mail upon receipt of all parts of the submission, including (1) the abstract, (2) the Abstract Submission Form
, and (3) the Disclosure Form
.
Notification
Notification regarding acceptance or rejection of abstracts will be made by e-mail in early September 2008. At that time, further details about the conference schedule and poster specifications will be provided to the presenting author. If you have not received an e-mail notification by August 31, 2008, please contact Conor Lynch at C.Lynch@Elsevier.com or (631) 424-8900 ext 321.
ABSTRACT GUIDELINES
Read these guidelines carefully before sending the abstract.
- All abstracts must be submitted via electronic mail, either as an attachment or within the body of the e-mail.
- All abstracts will be peer reviewed. Acceptance will be based on originality and importance to the field of supportive oncology. The decision of the scientific committee in this regard will be final. Abstracts must be submitted in time to permit any clarification from those selected for presentation in the conference.
- When submitting an abstract for consideration, please include the following:
- Title: The abstract title should be brief and reflect the contents of the abstract.
- Authors: List all authors by last name followed by initials of first and middle names. Please indicate the presentation author’s name. All correspondence will be with the presenting author.
- Affiliations: Please group institutions together and provide institution names, cities, state/provinces, and country of origin if not the United States.
- Content: All abstracts must be organized according to four sections, identified by the following headers in bold: Background, Methods, Results, Discussion. Abstracts may include one data table, but illustrations and figures are not permitted. This section may not be longer than 250 words. Abstracts submitted with content longer than 250 words may be edited or discarded.
- Abstracts will be judged solely on the data submitted. Promises that "further data will be provided" are discouraged and will decrease the likelihood of the abstract’s acceptance.
- Data from long-term clinical trials may be re-presented if there is significant new information to add to the data presented elsewhere.
- Only standard abbreviations should be used, and they should be kept to a minimum.
- Use generic names for drugs.
- All sections of the Abstract Submission Form must be completed. Only abstracts conforming to these guidelines and received by the advertised date will be considered by the scientific program committee.
- All submissions should be sent by August 1, 2008 to abstracts@supportiveoncology.net.
SUBMISSION CONDITIONS
Read these conditions carefully before sending the abstract.
- All submitters who are accepted for poster presentations must register and pay conference registration fees. Only abstracts of authors who have paid their registration fees by August 31, 2008 will be scheduled for presentation and included in the conference materials.
- There are no limits to the number of abstracts an individual may author.
- The accepted abstracts will be on display from Thursday, October 16, through Saturday, October 18. A General Poster Session/Reception will be held on the evening of Thursday, October 16, 2008, after the conference day has ended. Presenting authors should be available at their poster during this evening reception on October 16 to informally answer questions from meeting attendees.
- Submission of the papers automatically grants the organizers permission to publish them in the September 2008 supplement to The Journal of Supportive Oncology and on the Web at www.supportiveoncology.net.
- Abstracts accepted for presentation will be published exactly as submitted and should be checked for accuracy and misspelling prior to submission.
- Requests for withdrawal of an abstract must be made in writing before August 15, 2008.
